In the 1960s and 1970s, popular ideas about American Indian art were transformed by artists such as Fritz Scholder (Luiseño, 1937–2005), whose haunting canvases of Native Americans combined realism, tragedy, and bold colors with the genres of abstract expressionism and pop art.
An artist of spectacular gifts, Scholder was equally adept in creating abstracted landscapes and portraits that captured the paradoxes of contemporary Native lives.
The pattern on this Pendleton blanket is based on the painting New Mexico No. 1 (1964), a landscape in horizontal bands of color that reflects Scholder’s early encounter with the Southwest.
Each blanket is crafted of 100% pure virgin wool with a cotton warp and measures 64 x 80 in.
