  About the Book
Native artists representing a range of cultural backgrounds and artistic media created This Path We Travel: Celebrations of Contemporary Native American Creativity, an installation exhibition based on the travels of 15 Native American artists to sites representing the four cardinal directions, where they conceived works reflecting the traditions and sensibilities of indigenous peoples. Published in conjuction with this exhibition, This Path We Travel enables readers to share this creative process.

The artists of This Path We Travel came from diverse Native cultures to create a unified composition of Native thought, belief, and expression—one that brings together their individual viewpoints and experiences into a single multifaceted vision. Participants agreed that the project, although radically new in form, would be “grounded in the traditions of Native people and based upon an older Native model of cooperation and sharing.”

The text is written entirely be Native Americans. Anchored with essays by Lance Belanger (Maliseet) and Frank LaPena (Wintu–Nomtipom), this book offers stunning pictures of the artists at work throughout the project, taken by photographer Walter Bigbee (Comanche). Artists such as Pualani Kanaka`ole Kanahele (Native Hawaiian), José Montaño (Qulla), Dan Namingha (Tewa–Hopi), and others present statements about the project in their own words, accompanied by brief profiles of their lives and works. This Path We Travel reflects the strong thread of cultural and artistic continuity that binds contemporary Native American artists to their artistic forebears. It is a testament to the survival of indigenous innovation and tradition, despite overwhelming historical obstacles.

This Path We Travel provides the reader with a rare and unique opportunity to share in what is a remarkable creative process. The text, written entirely by Native Americans, and made complete with outstanding essays by Lance Belanger (Maliseet) and Frank LaPena (Wintu–Nomtipom), is complemented by a variety of stunning pictures of the artists at work.”
