To commemorate the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall on September 21, 2004, we proudly present the museum’s first blanket in collaboration with Pendleton Woolen Mills of Portland, Oregon.

Ho-Chunk artist and NMAI curator of contemporary art, Truman Lowe, has designed this extraordinary collectors' quality blanket to honor his mother, Sauninga, who belonged to the tribe’s Bear Clan. Her traditional ribbonwork was the inspiration for its design. An internationally acclaimed sculptor, Lowe’s abstract works in wood and metal draw inspiration from his ancestral culture and landscape. Truman is also a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

In Ho-Chunk culture, Elders say that long ago, a bear was walking along a high knoll by the Black River in Wisconsin. As it passed in front of the sun, the brilliant glow of the bear’s coat so impressed the Namegiver that he named it "Sauninga," which is the Ho-Chunk word for "The Shining One." Among many tribes, clan names are an ancient tradition by which tribal members may identify themselves, their family, and their lineage. In the Ho-Chunk community, there are twelve clans, one of which is the Bear Clan.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this blanket will go toward educational programs at the NMAI.

As a special thank-you for their ongoing support, NMAI Members will receive free shipping on blanket orders made through the NMAI website or our toll free number, 800-242-NMAI (6624).

Three different editions of the blanket have been produced. All blankets are crafted of 100% pure virgin wool with a cotton warp and are 64 x 80 in.
