This animal mola (pictured right) was made in Kuna Yala, or "Kuna Land", on the coast of Panama. It's made with 3 colors in 3 layers. We borrowed it from the Museum Shop to demonstrate how molas are created.

Kuna women create beautiful molas. Drawing a design, basting, cutting, and sewing are the basic steps used to make a mola. Molas are layers of colorful cotton fabric. They may have two layers of color or many layers of different colors. The more layers of color, the more complicated the mola.
