In 1996, Cacique Carlos López (bottom photos, left), Balbina Denis (top photo, left), Elvira Torres (top photo, middle), and Nicanor González (not pictured) visited the Research Branch of the National Museum of the American Indian in order to document the museum's Kuna collection. These four cultural specialists, who are knowledgeable about the sergan (old) designs, provided names, sources, and interpretation for the molas in the museum's collection. From the women, we also gained an understanding of the history of mola making from a contemporary Kuna woman's perspective. - Nancy B. Rosoff, NMAI curatorial liaison for The Art of Being Kuna |
