The Frank Day Exhibit at NMAI February 15 through May 8, 1998 |
Frank Day (1902-76) painted more than 200 scenes depicting Maidu tribal history, ceremonies, and customs. A self-taught artist, Day's concern for the preservation of his people's cultural traditions inspired his highly-narrative and imaginative paintings. | ||||
"Memory and Imagination" was
organized by the Oakland Museum
of California, where it premiered in March 1997. The exhibition,
catalog and national tour are made possible by the National Endowment
for the Humanities, the California Arts Council, the National Endowment
for the Arts, and the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Community
Folklife Program, which is administered by the Fund for the Folk
Culture. |
