The work of the influential Tlingit artist Jim
Schoppert (1947-1992) is showcased in this exhibition of 50 objects
that include large woodcarvings, masks and poetry.
This retrospective celebrates the innovative art of Schoppert, an
artist who challenged the traditional norms of Northwest Coast art while at the
same time serving as a spokesperson for all contemporary Alaska Native artists.
Instrument of Change was organized by the Anchorage Museum
of History and Art and the Anchorage Museum Association, and was on view at NMAI
October 3, 1999 through February 6, 2000.
