Between about AD 450 and AD 1150, the Hohokam of the low Sonoran Desert of Arizona produced buff-colored pottery decorated with red painted designs, in addition to unpainted ware for cooking and storage. Hohokam vessel shapes—including scoops, plates, censers, tripod and rectangular vessels, animal effigies, and jars—are more diverse than those found among other contemporary Southwestern peoples.
