In ancient Mesoamerica, architectural stonework was as remarkable as smaller stone carvings that represented deities, warriors, and priests. The great masters of modern Mexico carry on this stonework tradition, creating fountains, columns, and pots for gardens, balconies, and large rooms.

Artists use a variety of stone, including alabaster, freestone, granite, onyx, and obsidian. Volcanic rock is also used to make reproductions of ancient Mesoamerican art, ashtrays, toys, and miniatures. The basic tools used are the rock itself and a chisel. Finishing includes polishing the pieces with corncobs.
