Juanita Velasco demonstrates the art of weaving on the traditional back-strap loom, tells the story depicted in her weaving, and offers friendship bracelet workshops as a hands-on activity for all ages.

Fritz Scholder: Indian/Not Indian Exhibition Video

In the 1960s and 70s, the notion of American Indian art was turned on its head by artists who fought against prejudice and popular clichés. At the forefront of this revolution was Fritz Scholder (Luiseño, 1937-2005). This video profiles this prolific artist and serves as an introduction to the NMAI exhibition of the same name.

Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) from Spokane, Wash., will perform swing-era classics of legendary jazz singer Mildred Bailey (Coeur d'Alene). Keefe, 19, won an outstanding vocal soloist award at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival in 2007. She will be accompanied by the Jerrol Pennerman Octet, an ensemble from Howard University.

In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month.

Mémère Métisse (2008, 30 min.) Canada. Janelle Wookey (Métis). The filmmaker resourcefully campaigns for her grandmother to embrace the richness of their Métis heritage.

Umiaq Skin Boat (2008, 31 min.) Canada. Jobie Weetaluktuk (Inuit). In Inuktitut with English subtitles. When elders of the Inuit community of Inukjuak in northern Quebec decide to revive the lost art of making a traditional umiaq, a filmmaker from the community captures their experiences.
